The picture’s above  show high-tides along  Boracay’s White Beach   which are  eroding the  paradise island .Can you say global warming ??

The hightides are so high tourists must walk knee deep through the ocean.dscn9741.JPG

The hightides are so high tourists must walk knee deep through the ocean.

Living on Boracay Island in the Philippines I’ve learned over the last few years that we  really are at the mercy of the rising ocean. Here on Boracay  it’s obvious to see the dying coconut tree’s which are drowning in the rising high-tides of the ocean.Check out the right side of the above photo which shows the  coconut tree  missing it’s green leaves.Very sad indeed.

The global warming issue which causes the melting of the ice in the Antarctica and the subsequent rising of the oceans is happening so very quickly it’s scary. If the ocean rises over the next 2 years as fast as it did during the past 2 years than we will need to find a solution here to protect the island of Boracay .I read that for every cm the ocean rises it will cause  one meter of  beach erosion . That is scary.

All islanders need to start thinking about a solution to protect paradise from the rising tides .One solution that comes to mind is to build a beach wall along the beach trail from one end of White Beach to the other . This of course would cost a fortune, take years to complete , and probably be a little ugly , but would  most probably protect the island,   especially during those super typhoon’s   .

    • The History Of Cocomangas Jam Jar

    • Cocomangas Customers smiling and enjoying the taste of the infamous Jam Jart Cocktails.

Happy customers at Cocomangas Shooter Bar enjoying the Jam Jar cocktails.

Many moons ago when I first opened Cocomangas Shooter Bar ,the bar was  built   so that half of it was without walls so that the beautiful sea-breeze from Boracay’s White Beach could flow through the bar keeping the party animals at a cooler temperature.

But there was one major problem with having no walls around the bar ,  customers could exit from anywhere and with them went the bar’s nice expensive cocktail glasses. It was not easy to buy new cocktail glasses. To buy more glasses I had to travel 3 hours to Kalibo(nearest city) , and another 3 hours back ,as Boracay glass suppliers back in the 80’s were non existent , or if I wanted the really nice cocktail glasses I had to make a special trip to Manila , which was way far away and was a very expensive trip .

So I had an important choice to make, enclose the bar so my  customers would have to exit from one point so I could monitor the glassware coming and going  , but by doing so I would lose the cool sea-breeze , or find an alternative cheaper glassware .I chose the latter and voila ,the now infamous  Jam Jar was born sometime back in the late 80’s .

I was walking the street’s of Manila back in the 80’s and found a supplier of Jam Jars for  a low price of 5 peso($0.20) each .That would save me thousands  of peso’s  in glassware and I could keep the bar with that open air atmosphere .It was a win win .I printed the Cocomangas Jam Jar logo on stickers  which acted  like  labels which were stuck on  the side of the jar to create a unique original drink , and today that Jam Jar has  fueled many a good times here at Cocomangas Shooter Bar.

At first we served only the original Jam Jar mix in those Jars , but today we serve all our cocktails in the now infamous jars.Cocomangas  top 5 jars are :The original Jam Jar,the Bailey’s Shake , the Illusion Jar,the Mango Splash Jar, and the Boracay Island Ice Tea(Long Island ).All massive ,all potent ,all at the reasonable price  of P140.00 peso($2.95) and are available 2 for 1 during our nightly happy hour 7:30pm-9:30pm.

Drop by Cocomangas Shooter Bar any night of the year and try all of the delicious potent cocktail jars.

    • China Enters The Cocomangas Still Standing Top 12

    • Cocomangas Scoreboard for “Still standing after 15..” showing China in 12th place in the world.

The scoreboard at Cocomangas Shooter Bar  showing China entering the top  13 countries of the world for drinking the most “still standing after 15…” shot challenge .China right now is number 12 , while the Philppines is the number 1 country in the world .Do it for your country!!!

Tourism on Boracay can be measured by reading the still standing scoreboard which hangs on the wall at the most famous night club on the island , Cocomangas Shooter Bar.If you drink the infamous shooter list of 15 shots and you’re still standing you get one number for your country, your name engraved on the wall of fame , and a free t-shirt . Cocomangas slogan is  “do it for your country” and thousands have done it , recording a score for their respective homelands.

In 1st place is the Philippines . Makes sense as Boracay is in the Philippines and the greatest number of tourists to the island are locals from the Philippines . In 2nd place is Korea . Makes sense also as Boracay over the past 5 years has catered to thousands of Korean visitors , sometimes over 15,000 Korean arrivals in a month. In 3rd place is the United States of America. Lots of Filipinos living in the states called balikbayans drink the 15 shots for the USA , plus there are a lot of Americans living and working in Asia, that like to go for a holiday in Boracay and while they are here they like to try the still standing after 15.In 4th place is England . I think the English just love to drink , party hard and get drunk.Or it might be that many thousands of English live in Hong Kong and make Boracay their holiday destination .In 5th place is Canada . I guess Cocomangas being half Canadian owned has helped with  pushing Canada into the top 5 drinking countries of the world as most Canadians traveling to Boracay like to pop in to say hello. Then the pride of being Canadian takes over and they end up drinking the 15 .

The still standing scoreboard has been in existence since Dec 24, 1990 keeping a close tally on every set of 15 shots served. So after 18 years of pouring shooters ,  China has finally entered the top 12 , and are currentlyat at number 12 with 361 Chinese drinking the 15 shots. With China’s economy growing at such an incredible pace and with a population of over 1 billion ,  i reckon tourism to Boracay from China will be absolutely huge in the coming years . I’m predicting China will enter the top 5 countries on the still standing scoreboard in 2 years time . Just 500 drinkers separate them from Canada in 5th place.

I ll keep you updated on that one as i find it interesting how tourism numbers to the island are reflected in the Cocomangas still standing scoreboard .Drop by and check it out for yourself and you might just do it for your country or to just get drunk.

      Yours Truly,

      John Munro
